The Importance of Marching Band
-
Marching band is an outdoor ensemble comprised of students who play:
- Wind Instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and tuba)
- Percussion (snare drum, tenor drum, bass drum, marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, auxiliary instruments, and electronic instruments)
- Color Guard (students who dance while spinning rifles and flags on the field. They are the main visual component of our show)
The marching band performs at Northrop Varsity Home Football Games and Marching Band competitions. Football games are on Friday nights and Marching Band competitions are held on Saturdays in the months of September and October.

The marching band traveled to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida in 2025. We take big trips every 4 years! Stay tuned to the trip planned for 2029!
The most important aspect to our program is attendance. We can only be successful with consistent attendance from all marching band members. Before committing to the season, please review the Marching Band Calendar located on our website. Look at every month from May to October.
Due to the financial nature of marching band, we charge each student $400 for the full marching band season. Our program is not financed by Northrop High School or Fort Wayne Community Schools. Our operating costs are funded by families paying the band fee and participating in fundraisers. There are also additional costs to the season that are not covered by band fees. We understand that the band fee could put financial strain on our families. We have a payment schedule that is spread out throughout the season to help make small amounts more manageable to achieve. If you are in the position of needing financial assistance, please send an email and we WILL figure it out. We want everyone to be in marching band and this program is willing to work with all families to make that happen.
At Northrop High School, we do our best to provide the students and families with meaningful, exciting experiences that will impact their lives in a positive way. Students make so many friends in marching band and it’s a great way to meet new people. Colleges love to see students who completed 4 years of marching band!
